Ellen Paul traveled a circuitous path on her way to
establishing Paul&Partners—a full service marketing company specializing in
printing and direct mail—but each step in that path lead her in that ultimate
direction.
After graduating from the University
of Maryland with an MA in
English, she worked for a series of national and international non-profit
organizations, honing her communications skills and expanding her repertoire of
communications knowledge. Along the way she served as President of the local
chapter of the Religious Public Relations Council (RPRC) and on the local board
of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She also picked up top awards
for marketing and public relations campaigns from RPRC and PRSA and for design
from the International Association of Business Communicators.
Owning her own business started on a lark as a freelance writing assignment.
Soon the freelancing became fulltime and she quit non-profits for the world of
self-employment. Several starts and regroups later, she founded
Paul&Partners in 2002.
Today Paul&Partners employs 30, and has a client list that includes
prestigious universities, non-profits, creative agencies, Fortune 500
companies, real estate firms and financial institutions.
Starting with a concept, P&P can develop and manage a direct mail or
marketing campaign, from selecting lists, creating copy and design, printing,
imaging and mailing, to capturing response data and analyzing campaign results
on P&P’s proprietary web-based software.
Finding herself with a growing production facility, Ellen inked two SBA 504
loans to purchase the buildings from which the company operates. Today she is
president of the condo association board.
An advocate of giving back to the community, Ellen devotes most Saturdays to
animal rescue work and supporting her sister’s efforts to establish a safe
haven for abused women and children in Southern Maryland.
She has taught business development at two community colleges and is a regular
speaker to groups of high school students who are looking for direction in
their lives. She writes a monthly column, Postal Notes, for Advents, the
magazine of the Direct Marketing Association of Washington.
A believer in giving back to her employees who have been instrumental in her
success, Ellen is ESPO-ing Paul&Partners, or selling the company back to
her employees, so that upon her retirement her employees will be the owners of
the organization, thus ensuring the next generation of entrepreneurs will have
a firm basis from which to grow their business.
